From The Mouth Looking Out |
Well, hello again and yes,
I know I did touch on Mallacoota in the last marathon blog, but you know, I
would never do things by halves! Due to
the extreme length of the last blog I really didn't do justice to this amazing
place and so I thought I would just re-visit Mallacoota with you and instead of
blathering on for hours like I usually do, I will keep the dialogue brief and
instead indulge your senses with an abundance of beautiful photos.
Mallacoota was an
incredibly picturesque spot and certainly very photo-worthy. We stayed there for 1 week and during that
time journeyed up and down the coast capturing just a little of the natural
beauty there.

Next Morning - The Sun! |
Whilst there we went on yet
another boat trip, this time on the Gypsy Princess with Captain John
Gerard. This was one of the better ones
we have been on and took us up the Genoa River and Maramingo Creek. The captain, John, was very well versed in
his subjects, was informative about the local area, fauna and flora and more
importantly, passionate about the place in which he lives. The boat was small and comfortable, would
have been OK regardless of the weather and we were treated to a small, simple
but very tasty afternoon tea. The cost
of the trip was $40 per head and we were on the water for 2 ½ hours. We were blessed with a brilliant day and were
able to tick all the relevant boxes : Whistling Kites, Sea Eagles, Seals,
Pelicans, Lyre Bird, Darter (Snake Bird) and Azure Kingfishers. The cruise took us through both wilderness
and pastoral country, we fed the Sea Eagles and the Kites and the whole
experience was a good one. We did get an
absolute plethora of photos but as I have published many photos of boat trips
in the past, I won’t be publishing any this time.

I would have happily stayed
at Mallacoota for longer but DD was anxious to move on – we did have a few ‘warm’
discussions about the likelihood of obtaining more absolute water-front sites
like this one and as of course, I am just the woman here, I was compelled to
conform to ‘The Bloke’s Wishes’. Oh well
– I don’t know why I am complaining really, we did have a full moon while we
were there (photos to prove it!) and the mood swings for the duration were all
over the place. No.................I am
not going to stipulate ‘whose’ moods were swinging, let’s just say the fault is
never one-sided. Perhaps it was a good
thing to move on!

Before The Storm |
|
What Storm Was That? |
Just one of the good things
about Mallacoota was the lovely weather – balmy and up to low 20s – light
zephyrs tickling the skin and fluffing the hair made it just delectable. As you will see from the photos, evenings
were just something else and we were able to actually sit outdoors and enjoy a
light libation or three – we even had a fire and friends to share it with.
There was just one hiccup at Mallacoota, we did have a storm come in and it blew like the blazes as they say. We have weathered some big storms over the years in Jez, but this is the first one to throw a tree branch at us. In the middle of the night, while the wind was literally screaming around the van, we heard an almighty thump - on investigation it appeared a largish branch had just missed the van. A more detailed inspection the following morning showed that we were not totally unscathed. The offending branch had actually clipped the rear of the van, breaking the little hatch in the bathroom in the process. It is not a major calamity - DD has taped and glued the whole thing shut until we can effect more substantial repairs. Considering the branch broke off right above our heads it could have been so much worse. As usual our exceptional good luck held.

Next time I talk to you it
will be from the south of New South Wales, Sapphire Coast Country and the tiny
town of Pambula. Until then go with the
flow – it’s way too tiring fighting the current! Stephanie.
